CHAPTER 9. PEOPLE MAKE MISTAKES – Assume things will go wrong, but try to anticipate and prevent the mistakes by testing them on people who are in the same target group as the final users. Provide well-written error messages for the case that things go wrong after all, and make these as clear and simple as possible.

1) People are programmed to enjoy surprises and, therefore, new and novel capture attention.
2) People will do a task rather than be idle, but only if the task is not too hard.
3) People make snap decisions about whether a website is trustworthy, so design elements (color, font, layout, navigation) are critical in making it through the first “trust rejection” phase. Content and credibility become important only afterwards.

People are more motivated as they get closer to a goal, whereby an illusion of progress is just as effective as real progress. We are inherently lazy and settle for a good-enough solution rather than search for the optimal solution. We love shortcuts, but only use them if they are easy.
